Mr Thomas's
About This Spot
Stepping into Mr Thomas's feels like coming upon a cherished local gem by the water’s edge—a place where the warm aroma of freshly fried fish mingles softly with the chatter of familiar faces and the occasional laughter drifting from the takeaway counter. Nestled just a short stroll from Hollingworth Lake, the pace here is unpretentious and inviting, perfectly suited for anyone looking to unwind after a bracing walk or simply enjoy a heartfelt meal in a setting that takes comfort seriously.
The mood inside is a gentle blend of casual ease and friendly attentiveness. There's a quiet rhythm to the place, where staff move with practiced kindness, balancing the ebb and flow of guests between those grabbing a quick takeaway and others settling in to savor their meal at the modest seating area. It’s that balance of familiarity and care that gives the space its grounded charm.
At Mr Thomas’s, food is very much a part of the surrounding experience—not just what you eat but how you connect with the moment. The rigid crunch of golden-battered haddock and the soft, yielding texture of mushy peas or homemade pies evoke a sense of tradition without feeling stuck in the past. Whether it’s a generous serving that lasts you all day or a modest plate paired with a cool Peroni beer to sip slowly while watching the lake, every bite encourages slowing down and appreciating simple pleasures.
Visitors often bring stories of hearty meals shared after lake walks, of familiar tastes that comfort and satisfy without fuss. The seating may be limited, but that only adds to the intimacy, where conversations linger over crispy chips and the warmth of sticky toffee pudding, and where the occasional friendly smile from behind the counter reminds you this is more than just a place to eat—it’s a local pause, a spot to feel held in the easy rhythm of community life.

I love getting food from here when I visit hollingworth lake. Today I ordered breaded calamari rings to start which I thought came with a dip.....it wasn't with my order. I also ordered large haddock, chips, peas and gravy to take out. The haddock was absolutely humongous, so I ate some and took the rest home. I paid £22.05 for my food and it was worth every penny. Next time, i will buy a smaller haddock

I’ve been here twice with my mum and on both occasions the service was great and the food was amazing. Both the haddock and cod fish and chips were cooked perfectly and were very flavourful. The price is a bit on the high side but it’s absolutely worth it!

Eat in! You must if you want cripsy battered fish. The haddock and chips special is excellent. The batter is well seasoned. The haddock is good. For £15 each with a drink its good value. Limited seating. Parking is limited in the car park across the road. Makes a nice afternoon to have fish and chips then walk around the lake.

Clean fish and chip shop with a sit down restaurant and takeaway area. Ordered for takeaway. Staff were friendly, professional and polite. Onion rings were freshly made and deliciously crispy. The small chips and mushy peas were a bit squashed in the small container. Food was tasty.

Hands down the best fish and chips in Rochdale. And one of the best I’ve ever had. Big fish, large portion of chips. They do a very nice homemade tartar sauce.
